Thump a Creative Agency Like a Watermelon

It doesn't take more than a few seconds on Google to figure out what you need to look for in a watermelon, or to locate a handful of tips for selecting the right used car. When it comes to finding the right creative agency for a website or some marketing materials, however, a lot of business owners and executives feel like they're in the dark.

In fact, most go with gut feelings and intuitions (which occasionally turn out to be wrong) simply because they don't know what kinds of criteria to use when making a selection. To help you avoid making the same kind of mistakes, here are a few things to look for when evaluating different creative service agencies:

Their own brand presence. Chances are, if a company isn't doing a good job with their own design and branding, they aren’t going to be much help with yours, either. Even the busiest agency is going to make time to maintain its own look and content. A lack of attention or continuity to their own marketing materials could be a sign that they aren't motivated, or ignore details.

Experience in your industry (or with similar challenges). You want to know that the agency in question can help you with the challenges you're facing. So, look for testimonials or case studies from clients in your industry, or at least from businesses that have required the same kind of help that you will.

A long-term track record of success. In life and business, short-term performances don't mean as much as long-term trends. In other words, don't settle for business that seems to be "hot" right now – find a partner that has helped lots of companies grow over time. Be especially careful hiring a creative team that's been in business for five years or less, because they might not have the skills or experience you'll need for ongoing assignments.

The right portfolio. Naturally, it makes sense to choose an agency that shares your visual style. Still, this point comes last because you don't want to be fooled by a nice-looking set of samples if the other three elements aren't in place.
